I am in the process of developing my own wedding planning business and have got many things worked out except for timing. Just a few questions – how long does a wedding planner need to plan a wedding? Is there a specific amount of time the wedding planner should plan the wedding in? How often should the planner meet with the client and over what length of time? Just anything at all about timing and wedding planning would be great. What is the best way to do it? Also, I am going to be a more budget-friendly planner, not charging heaps so any marketing advice would be helpful too. Anything you know is much appreciated. Thanks!

I only know based on how much time it took to plan my wedding. I had about 200-250 guests, and 3 months was perfect. This was also while I had a full time job, so that is probably a good gauge of how long you should give if you are planning multiple weddings at a time. However, if it’s the only wedding you are doing, then you could probably do it in half the time. I did everything myself from food to flowers to decorations, everything.
I would meet with the client once a week at first, when you have a lot of things for them to look at. Then when you get all your questions answered, maybe every 2 weeks.

My sister got engaged and i wanted to buy her a book or two that could help you plan her wedding! The wedding will be on a smaller scale (i think) and i want to be able to find the book in a book store like Barnes & Noble.

What are the BEST books that help plan a wedding!??

  4. SimonHewitt says:

    Hi Corl,

‘Perfect Wedding Package’ is a book that your sister could download from amazon, for kindle, iPad or computer. It contains a wedding planning checklist for the whole year as well as a wedding budget plan. The book also assist with weight loss, public speaking, fear of flying, stop smoking, nerves and anxieties on the wedding day.

I had a pretty generous budget and even though I splurged on some aspects of our wedding, I never would have hired a wedding planner. I’m very particular about things and I wouldn’t want to be limited to the items/vendors/ideas the planner would suggest. Besides, I loved doing the legwork. I had all of our major vendors, as well as my dress, picked out within 4 months of being engaged.

Wedding planner = waste of money, especially if your wedding is local. The only time a wedding planner might be necessary is if the couple is doing a destination wedding and they’re not familiar with the area.

I am in a long distance relationship and we are about to start planning a wedding. Because we aren’t able to do the typical wedding folder full of ideas I was wondering if there are any sites that provide services that specialize in this type of wedding planning. She is in Canada and I am in the U.S. The wedding will be in Canada. Thanks for any help.

I would contact first the Canadian Bureau of Tourism and get a start from there, also, contact the Business Association or something similar in the town where you will get married, town council, ask for city clerk and go from there, keep looking for leads and eventually you will get on the right track. Also, get a telephone book from same city and look thru it. Contact any florists, wedding shops, caterers, etc. listed in phone book. Do you have any friends in the town/city where you will be getting married?? If so, contact them for help.

I am trying to plan my wedding and I have no idea where to start. I’m looking for a book or website that will tell me everything. Wedding planning for dummies would work except that I am planning an outdoorsy, simple wedding. Lots of guests, I would like to follow some traditions but not all of them. Any ideas?

I am getting married in two months and I need some ideas on how to get a little more organized. I was wondering how you managed guest lists, budgets, seating charts, RSVP, thank you notes, invitations, locations, etc. Currently, I am using Microsoft Excel for a guest list, but I was wondering what type of software is good for wedding planning or is it better to write everything out?

How did you plan your wedding?
I didn’t mean two months, hahaa, I meant ten months. That makes a huge difference, doesn’t it?

my friend recently told me that he was getting married with his girlfriend and i support them they love/like eachother every much, the thing is that they are planning to get married secretly thru cityhall.(marrying thru the city) without their parents finding out they been together for 2years and 1/2. what they are doing i know is not right but they both have choosen to do it. they told me that they were going to do that and after his girlfriend finishes college she is goin to be a sophmore in the fall you think that will be able to keep it from their parents? is it wrong
they love each other they been goin out for 2 years and 1/2 and kown each other for 5 years!
    they are both 19

Do you know the whole situation though? Is there a set of parents that are completely overbearing and/or would forbid the marriage? I am in a similar situation although it is in the earlier stages of it right now… I just got engaged after dating my bf for 4 1/2 years. My parents don’t like him because he’s not “of our social class”… my parents are snobs. But for us, I would give anything to be with him, even my parents’ trust. Honestly, I don’t think they could keep it from their parents because if the parents suggest they get married later on, the truth would have to come out eventually, and then the parents would be REALLY mad that they couldn’t be a part of their child’s big day. For me, I’m practically estranged from my parents for reasons of abuse but I get along very well with my future in-laws so that’s okay for me, but it’s a big moment in a parents’ life to see their son or daughter get married. If you’re on good terms, why not let your parents know?

I got engaged on Sunday :-D :-D and we want to start wedding planning. We have no idea where to start, how long it will take, how much it will cost…..I know it depends on the wedding, but some kind of idea would help us greatly. Please share your experiences xx

Me and my fiance are getting married on September 11, 2010. I have most of the wedding planned. But I am now in search of ideas for the reception and decorating it. The wedding is race themed. We met at the dirt track races in Poplar Bluff, MO and the races are a big part of our lives. The colors are black and white checkered and red to accent it. If you have an idea please help me out! Thanks!

  15. MaraF says:

This is a GREAT theme and since it’s how you met and a big part of your lives it’s VERY personal.

In addition to a traditional wedding cake, you can do a ‘grooms cake” and of course make it race themed, if you don’t know what a grooms cake is, just google it.

I love the ideas here already, but just becareful not to OVERDO the theme…..I always like to do things like this and have the theme woven very subtley throughout the wedding/reception.

A way to make a great exit with your groom is to ride off in a race car (if you have or know of someone that has one)

    Have fun!!!!

I am just curious. How long does the wedding planning process typically last? And how long does a couple usually be engaged before the actual ceremony?

  17. jellybeancounter says:

Planning doesn’t usually take all that long. Engagements just last a while because venues book early, or couples may wait for a specific time to get married.

When I got married, I had the majority of my wedding planned 4 months after I was engaged (and that’s because I dragged my feet on the florist). But I had to wait 8 months after that because we wanted to get married in the summer.

    A typical engagement is 12 – 18 months.
