Bahamas Braces as Hurricane Sandy Nears

Bahamas Braces as Hurricane Sandy Nears

The Bahamas braces as Hurricane Sandy nears the island chain after becoming a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday morning.
Bahamas Braces as Hurricane Sandy NearsAlthough this is not the news that brides expecting to have their wedding in the Bahamas this week as they now have to settle for a little liquid sunshine (our term in the Bahamas for rain).
The good news for the Bahamas is that the hurricane which made landfall in Jamaica on Wednesday afternoon, while packing 80 mph winds and rain, caused no significant damages to that island.
Making it very likely that Hurricane Sandy which is expected to weaken to as it passes over the larger landmass of Cuba may not be able to regain enough strength to significantly affect the Central and Northwestern Bahamas islands.

Government Issues Hurricane Sandy Warning

The Bahamas government has now issued a hurricane warning for the central and northwestern islands including New Providence as Hurricane Sandy is expected to move over these islands Thursday night into Friday.
The passage of Hurricane Sandy has also resulted in the closure of Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) in Nassau on Thursday. With all government and private schools as well as government offices being closed on Friday.
You can learn more about the expected track of this hurricane at National Hurricane Center.
